Conditions Treated by Deep TMS Around the World

In the USA and Europe, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been cleared to treat a variety of mental conditions, and innovative research continues to study applications to even more illnesses.TMS devices from various manufacturers are used and studied for treatment, including the BrainsWay Deep TMS device used in our office. To date, over 500,000 Deep TMS treatments have been delivered across 17 countries.

What does TMS treat?

Within the USA, the FDA has cleared BrainsWay Deep TMS for the following:

  • Treatment resistant major depressive disorder
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder

Although these are off-label treatments in the USA, in Europe Deep TMS has been cleared through CE certification for the following disorders:

  • Alzheimer’s disease 
  • Autism
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Chronic Pain
  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia (negative symptoms)
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Research continues on multiple conditions outside of this list as well, including Tourette’s syndrome, head trauma recovery, borderline personality disorder, and addictions such as cocaine and alcohol dependence. Off-label treatments are being done in centers across the USA for conditions not yet FDA approved.
